Aug 28 2009 01:19:45 So where is your pre-registration Craig? Common all you fence sitters, its the last one in Ontario this year
Working hard at breaking 800 in scores for this one. Kathy (my best half) has been with me the last two nights practicing and giving me her cruel opinion on my flying..and its working I think Lee |

Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Aug 31 2009 12:26:21 Maybe we could get the basic unknowns into the Chatham contest similar to Asbestos.
Basic unknowns are obviously not part of IMAC and would not count in contest results, but for the purpose of enriching the experience for Basic pilots, we could run them unofficially on an optional basis. Unknowns could be handed out to Basic contestants who want to do them the evening before just like other classes, and flown after the official contest flights end the next day. This would be an improvement over how we did it at Asbestos if we could get the optional Basic unknown announced and handed out the night before (Asbestos it was just brought along by Phil and I and many flew it the next day as a spur of the moment thing), and if it was scheduled to run right after freestyle before the field opened to open flying that would help -- at Asbestos it was a bit more ad hoc and it took a while to secure the field to run the basic unknowns after the contest since people were doing open flying by then. |

Aug 31 2009 19:58:41 I like the idea of an unknowns for Basic but it is purely optional and we don't want to freak out too many eginning IMACers. I therefore suggest they just get it at the pilots meeting in the am on Saturday, and we fly it at the end of the day if possible, after a half hour break to study it of course!

Re:Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Sep 01 2009 02:34:27 Hey all,
Welcome to the Chatham CAN-AM in 2 weeks Sept 12,13, the last NC IMAC contest before the NC finals in Wheeler. Looking forward to seeing y'all and I promise better weather than last time. Well I hope.. We've got some nice prizes from Smart Fly and maybe more. For those that haven't been before, we have a nice 6 acre flying field with unobstructed approaches. We'll be flying 2 flightlines, with all classes and some Freestyle- I'll have a good sound system on hand to liven it up! There is plenty of room for camping, and we have a clubhouse building that you can charge batteries if needed. There will be a concession stand for lunches. If the group wants to again, we'll go for a good time dinner at the steakhouse... apparently they have beer... and maybe a drumset Mike M! Our field GPS coordinates-- 42.289692, -82.208517 For map, hotel information and please preregister here: http://www.peneloperc.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=145&Itemid=51 and/ or on the IMAC website http://www.mini-iac.com/Home/ControlPanels/EventSystem/EventDetail/tabid/75/xmmid/397/xmid/208/xmview/2/RecordID/208/default.aspx Let's see some more registrations in advance so we can get geared up please guys! Looking forward to it! Thanks Don goneflyin@ciaccess.com cell: 818 912 9158 if you have any questions |

Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Sep 02 2009 11:05:19 The plan, as it stands, is for Kent Fabro and myself to travel with Lee to the event. We both have purchased good ear plugs for the trip as I have heard that Lee likes to sing Celine tunes full volume when he drives. I might just have lost my ride for mentioning that.
I still haven't even flown the basic routine yet this season (plane issues, weather, pilot issues, renovations, inlaw visit... you get the picture) with a few excuses thrown in for good measure. I am waiting on a new ignition module so I might get to practice this weekend if that solves the engine problem. I think Kent's plan is also to practice this weekend. The forecast looks good so far. If I don't fly, I will definitely be free labour. Hope to see you all there. Brendan |

So - how had is the intermediate routine anyway? |

Re:Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Sep 08 2009 18:10:38 Well it looks like I will not be flying in Chatham but will definitely be there to help out.
You have all heard of the plane called the "U-can-do", well my Extra 230 plane from now on will be called the "no-can-do". It takes off and lands just great but couldn't pull the petals off a daisy when it comes to going up even on a 45 degree line. Oh well, I will have my Aeroworks 50cc Yak ready to go in the next few weeks and with help from Kent and Lee, definitely ready for next year. See you all in Chatham. Brendan |

Sep 08 2009 22:42:05 Brendan,
Wrong engine or not running right? If it's the latter bring the plane and you'll have access to a whole bunch of tuner and tweaker types. |

Re:Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Sep 09 2009 14:57:23 Rick:
It is an older Extra 230 and very heavy for it's size. Probably a 1.2 size or a bit bigger. Not even sure of the make. The price was right ("here, take it." I think I will be looking for another practice plane this winter. not sure what yet but a 40cc would be nice. I will see what appears. Brendan |

Re:Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Sep 09 2009 17:02:20 Sounds very low on RPM. A DA100 can almost spin that fast.
I'd expect at least another 2K and likely more. Reading about lot's of ignition problems. People swap out the original and solves lot's of problems. |

Re:Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Sep 09 2009 19:36:35 Was that a poke at DA?
I rebuilt the carb, replaced the plug and did replace the ignition as it was failing when it heated up. I have an RCEXCEL (spelling?) ignition moduule on there now and that seemed to solve the quitting problem. Maybe a few more tanks with lots of oil will help. |

Re:Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Sep 09 2009 19:57:05 The manual states around 7850 with an 16x8 prop after 90 minutes of break in so it is definitely off the mark at 6800 or so. I have tried an APC prop over a wooden one (zinger) (it came with it) which helped a bit but is still not quite there.
I will run a few more tanks and then decide whether to look for a lighter plane for the engine or a bigger engine for the plane. The plane is in great shape except for a badly mutillated cowl so an engine swap might be worth it. Actually, if I opt for both, I end up with another plane. I kind of like that idea. |

Re:Chatham Aeronauts (Chatham, ON)
Sep 17 2009 22:19:12 Well it was a success...
21 pilots, from far and wide (Ottawa and Sudbury all the way to Ohio and Michigan), great weather, and everyone on their game. All but a couple were IMAC members. Pilots arrived Friday afternoon and started practicing. We were happy to have guest judges- Guillaume and Randy helped quite a lot. Thanks guys! Saturday started with perfect weather- and with Mike M serenading the pilots on the PA. We had the flight line skewed at 45 degrees to the field, for a couple reasons. Our neighbour has a horse farm that we needed to stay far away from, and it also lengthens the effective runway. This caused a bit of trouble for some guys, as they were having trouble getting a good flight line reference. We'll try to improve that next year. However it also put the flight line exactly east-west, so no one had to look into the sun all day! (not that bad eh!) We flew 3 rounds, plus an extra for basic, and finished somewhat early. It was kind of difficult to arrange judging and flight lines due to the imbalance of class populations- this is where our rent-a-judges came in very handy! The pilots were great at keeping themselves moving along. Saturday night was good eatin! A crew of more than 30 ended up at T-Bone's steakhouse for some beer and grub and some stories. Later, a smaller crew went over to RM Restoration for a tour of the shop. Even later, another crew ended up at the campfire at the field for an evening blast (eh Dave n Tom!) Sunday morning was really foggy, then cleared up for the Unknowns. All classed completed their unknowns, and Basic got an extra round of knowns in. What fun... Following another round of knowns for everyone, we set up some Basic Unknowns to try for our 3 brave Basic pilots. They did really well, and had fun at it! Thanks Isabel for that idea. It was done as a separate thing from the contest. Lunch was served both days by Dad (Norm) and his crew- Dave, James (my boy) and his two buddies. The sausages and TexBurgers were great! Thanks guys! Freestyle this year was very good- I'm glad to see more participation in this part of IMAC. We had 3 solos and one team compete. Dave and Tom from Ottawa flew a formation routine with their matching pilotless ( Bryan M won the freestyle with a well choreographed routine- with custom arranged music even! Scoring was expertly handled by Cliff and Val Bailey- reports showed up right after each round and no problems! Many, many thanks to these two, it's a long thankless job. So, the standings were announced and trophies awarded, and we could see the sometimes very close races in the classes- in particular first and second in Intermediate and Advanced- less than 50 points out of 8000 between Bryan M and Tom H in Intermediate, and less than 30 between Mike M and Louis M in Advanced. Great race! Unlimited was less than exciting however... The seniors race was good with Mike Roxberry winning with .749 points. Way to go old guy! Thanks have to go to the helpers with the event- Cliff and Val for scoring, Norm and crew for food, Rick for overall help, my wife Penny for many things, my boy James for being the photographer, and the club for donating the field for the event. Hope to see you all again next summer and thanks for making a good last event for Ontario IMAC. See here for scores: http://www.mini-iac.com/Portals/0/Regions/NC/Events/208/report_results.html Best, Don IMAC 2536 |
