Featured maneuver: simple hammerhead
The "Hammerhead" is also called a "Stall Turn". The simplest version of this maneuver starts when the airplane leaves horizontal flight and does a quarter loop to a vertical up line. At the top, the plane stops, pivots on its center of gravity and establishes a vertical down line. At the bottom of the down line, the aircraft flies a second quarter loop to return to horizontal flight.
According to the AMA Competition regulations, the following situations cause deductions:
  • The entry and the exit radius of the quarter loops do not match. The number of points deducted is at the discretion of the judge.

 

  • The up & down vertical lines do not appear to the judge’s eye as a straight line perpendicular to the horizon. Each 5 degrees of deviation from a vertical line will result in a 0.5 point deduction. This includes the case where the vertical lines are not properly wind corrected.
  • The pivoting does not take place in a plane parallel to vertical (therefore wind corrections must be removed before pivoting). For each axis, 0.5points points per 5 degrees will be deducted.
  • The plane should pivot around its center of gravity; if the point of rotation is ½ a wingspan or more away from the center of gravity, a 1 point deduction must be applied. “Fly-overs”, which are deviations of more than 4 wing spans, will earn an automatic “0”. However, no penalty will be applied for wind drift during that time.
  • There is any perceptible tail slide before the start of the pivot. This will cause the maneuver to be zeroed.
  • There is any change on any of the axis (pitch, roll) except the yaw axis during the pivoting. For each axis, 0.5points points per 5 degrees will be deducted.
  • There is any pendulum movement after the pivot. This will result in a downgrade of 0.5 points per 5 degrees.
  • Any added elements such as rolls, snaps etc are not positioned so that the lines before and after the element are equal. Perceptible difference: 1 point deduction, one line is twice as long as the other: 2 points deduction, one line is three times longer than the other: 3 points deduction, one line is missing: 4 points deduction and the two lines are missing: 2 points deduction.
  However, the following situations do not cause any deductions:
  • The upline and downline can be of unequal length, henceforth the altitude of the aircraft may be different at entry and the exit. No downgrade.
  • On account of wind correction, the pivot at the top of the upline may be less than 180 degrees. No downgrade is applicable for that.

Hmmmm that suppossed Hammerhead sure looked very very close to a flyover or wingover.

As a Judge I would have taken off 3 points at least on that alone. there was a bitt of pitch boble on the upline so another 1/2 point there and a 1/2 point on exit radius. so he'd get a 6 from me.

I like the concept of this post though, let's see more. Good idea!
